US Expats

Medicare does not provide coverage for healthcare costs for US citizens living abroad, with very limited exceptions, such as a medical emergency in a foreign country that is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital. US citizens living overseas can enroll in Part A and maintain Part B coverage, but the premiums for Part B may result in a late enrollment penalty if they delay enrollment upon returning to the US. It is often more advantageous to purchase a private international health insurance plan to cover costs abroad.

Cigna Global FAQ

International health insurance is medical coverage that covers expatriates living abroad for a long period of time. It’s for those that have packed up and taken residence overseas. With this insurance, you can protect yourself and your family in case of any health issues while living there.

Travel insurance is short-term medical coverage for people visiting another country on vacation or while backpacking. Travel insurance will cover emergency treatment, however, you’ll need to return to the country where you reside permanently for long-term care and support.

It also covers travel related issues, such as flight cancellations and protection against loss of personal items.

No. Expatriates cannot use their Medicare insurance while living internationally because the United States only covers its states and territories. You must instead pick a global insurance plan designed for individuals, families, and groups who are living abroad.

However, depending on your situation, you may want to keep your Medicare Plan in order to use it upon returning to the US.

All countries will expect expats to pay their medical bills, whether directly or through insurance. Public Healthcare options for expatiates may be limited, and some countries require residency to be eligible for country healthcare, which could take five to ten years.
No. The Cigna Over-60 plan is designed for retirement, with tailored health plans including for chronic conditions and cancer, and guaranteed renewal with no age limit. Premiums are not affected by individual claims.
